Marcel Duchamp is one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century. He is responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. In 1943, he developed an important contribution to the history of chess in the form of an endgame problem that has never been solved. Duchamp started the The Marcel Duchamp Fund of the American Chess Foundation in collaboration with Sidney Wallach. Towards the end of his life, the artist wished to amplify the presence of American chess players on the international level.

Duchamp, who was well known for having said “There is no solution, because there is no problem,” designed a Chess endgame with no solution for an exhibition at Julien Levy Gallery called "Through the Big End of the Opera Glass".
